Technology, Advancement and Commercialization (TAC) (Division)
211NB Requisition #

Technology Advancement & Commercialization (TAC) provides scientific and engineering solutions for challenging problems existing in the fields of health, environment, and energy.

In TAC, applied research and development, along with prototyping and scale-up activities, are concentrated in numerous research and application labs, as well as in a pilot plant facility located on RTI’s main campus in Research Triangle Park, NC.

TAC has an immediate opening for an entry level Engineer to support applied R&D activities in thermochemical biomass conversion for advanced biofuels and bioproducts production. Technologies under development include catalytic fast pyrolysis, biocrude separations, and hydroprocessing. Projects will range in scale from bench to pilot and are performed in a variety of testing environments. You must have excellent problem-solving skills to confidently select and size equipment and operate continuous and batch processing units with automated control systems.

In this role, you will provide technical support for operating small and medium size process equipment in the lab and at pilot-scale to conduct experiments in support of milestones and deliverables for federally funded R&D projects. This includes maintenance and operation of laboratory- to pilot scale equipment predominately related to thermochemical biomass conversion systems with an emphasis on performing high quality work in a team environment with minimum supervision. Your day-to-day duties will involve hands-on operation and maintenance of laboratory test systems, bench and pilot scale liquid separations, and sample preparation for routine analysis of physical and chemical properties in support of mass and element balances.

Additional responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Chemical handling as well as maintenance and modification of process equipment.
  • Accurate records of all experimental results from multiple R&D projects are expected to be maintained and technical data collected is expected to be analyzed and summarized for inclusion in technical reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed scientific publications, including maintaining electronic files and laboratory notes for work performed and documenting calculations, spreadsheet models, references, and reviewer comments, etc.
  • Participate in developing and executing research plans and support the conceptualization, design, and implementation of new innovative technologies.
  • Comply with all safety procedures and protocols after proper training and review of safety documentation detailing associated experimental hazards.

In addition to the meeting described job responsibilities, you must be highly motivated to develop new advanced biofuels and bioproducts technologies that become commercial reality. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required to effectively work as part of strong internal project teams contributing to RTI’s client relationships with industrial partners and government agencies.

At RTI, you will be provided the opportunity to conduct meaningful work in a collaborative, cross functional environment.  We are focused on your career development and provide a generous benefits package that includes tuition reimbursement, parental leave, paid time off, medical/dental, and 401K.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or other related engineering field.
  • Prior lab experience required, preferably in thermochemical biomass conversion (Pyrolysis and hydroprocessing).
  • Demonstrated background in reaction engineering and process engineering and control.
  • Experience with analytical instrumentation such as titrators, GC, GC-MS, NMR, and FTIR is desirable.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and with teams, and to establish and maintain good working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and clients.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and should not require now, or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa status.
