HR Directions seeks a candidate for its client, RTI International, for an Innovation Advisors Internship within the Innovation Advisors Group.

RTI's Internship Program emphasizes experiential and mentored learning experiences, providing students and recent degree recipients an opportunity to apply their academic knowledge and skills in a meaningful and practical way. We are committed to developing the future workforce by encouraging interns to explore various career paths in a nonprofit research institute setting that values diversity and inclusion. Through this program, interns will become accustomed to RTI's open and educational culture, support RTI's mission to improve the human condition, and build upon career goals and grow.

The intern will work alongside and receive mentorship by the Innovation Advisors and staff to conduct tasks related to market research and commercialization of new technologies that are often outside the scope of a candidate's current study or experience.

The selected intern will have responsibilities that include, but are not limited to: 

  • Conducting research using secondary resources (published company information, SEC filings, scholarly journals, trade literature, and news articles), as well as primary resources (phone interviews) when needed
  • Providing insightful analysis of opportunities identified during primary and secondary research
  • Developing marketing descriptions of new technologies and conduct research in a wide range of technology areas and industries
  • Understanding business and legal issues related to commercialization of new technologies, and to apply general technical acumen and scientific skills to evaluate a variety of technologies
  • Employing commercialization and innovation-related frameworks, such as the business model canvas and value proposition testing, to new technologies.

Additional Information

This paid U.S.-based internship, located in RTP will take place from September 2019 through December 2019. The internship requires a minimum commitment of 10-30 hours per week. Hours are flexible during business hours (8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday)
Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate or graduate students (including Master of Engineering Management Program (MEMP) students or MBA students) with a broad technical scientific background in engineering, science, or a related field with career interest in innovation, technology commercialization and consulting.
  • Demonstrated comfort and willingness to regularly work outside the scope of the candidate's technical field of study
  • Motivated, hardworking student with a passion for technology commercialization and consulting
  • Exceptional written and oral communication, time management, and analytical skills
  • Detail-oriented and able to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in fields such as chemistry with applied food and agriculture experience, sanitation and health, and criminal justice is a plus
  • Knowledge of or previous experience with product or process development, portfolio mapping/valuation, market research, technology evaluation and/or technology transfer is preferred

Physical and mental demands of this role include those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, as outlined above.  Examples include:  remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time; operating a computer and other office machinery; thinking, learning, and concentrating effectively and frequently communicating with other people, both within RTI and outside of RTI; frequently moving about inside and travel between offices and laboratories; frequently conducting laboratory site inspections (if applicable), ability to handle the stress associated in meeting frequent, multiple and tight deadlines, ability to work in excess of 40 hours per week as workload and deadlines may require, consistent demonstration of mental stability and ability to have regular, reliable and predictable attendance.
