Internship Description

RTI International seeks a candidate for an Innovation Technology Internship within the The Immersive Technologies Lab. 

The Immersive Technologies Lab was created to be a resource for RTI International and its partners by maintaining a deep technical understanding of current virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, IoT, and wearable technologies. The lab builds software for immersive technologies and artificial intelligence ranging from rapid prototypes to fully functional frameworks and products. The Immersive Technologies Lab is part of Lab 58 an emerging and disruptive technologies group within RTI International.

RTI's Internship Program emphasizes experiential and mentored learning experiences, providing students and recent degree recipients an opportunity to apply their academic knowledge and skills in a meaningful and practical way. We are committed to developing the future workforce by encouraging interns to explore various career paths in a nonprofit research institute setting that values diversity and inclusion. Through this program, interns will become accustomed to RTI's open and educational culture, support RTI's mission to improve the human condition, and build upon career goals and grow.  

The intern will be assisting in the creation and dissemination of information resources that will inform RTI employees and partners of new technologies coming out of Lab 58. The intern will also assist in the creation and documentation of market landscapes. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Creating one-pagers, curriculum, and documentation for new technologies
  • Developing videos to explain technologies in the lab
  • Interviewing staff about use cases for technology

Additional Information

This unpaid internship for academic credit, located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, will take place from September 2019  through May 2020.

The internship requires a minimum commitment of 10 hours per week. Hours are flexible during business hours (8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday).
Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled student pursuing a masters in instructional design
  • Eligible to receive academic credit or fulfill an academic program requirement
  • Work experience designing educational curriculum
  • Experience with emerging technologies 
  • Demonstrated leadership skills,independent worker
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal skills

Physical and mental demands of this role include those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, as outlined above.  Examples include:  remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time; operating a computer and other office machinery; thinking, learning, and concentrating effectively and frequently communicating with other people, both within RTI and outside of RTI; frequently moving about inside and travel between offices and laboratories; frequently conducting laboratory site inspections (if applicable), ability to handle the stress associated in meeting frequent, multiple and tight deadlines, ability to work in excess of 40 hours per week as workload and deadlines may require, consistent demonstration of mental stability and ability to have regular, reliable and predictable attendance.
