Internship Description

HR Directions seeks a candidate for its client RTI International for a Marketing & Communications Internship within the Social, Statistical and Environmental Sciences (SSES) business unit.  SSES is seeking a versatile and creative marketing intern to assist with developing and producing marketing communications projects that build brand, demonstrate thought leadership, and help achieve organizational objectives. 

RTI's Internship Program emphasizes experiential and mentored learning experiences, providing students and recent degree recipients an opportunity to apply their academic knowledge and skills in a meaningful and practical way. We are committed to developing the future workforce by encouraging interns to explore various career paths in a nonprofit research institute setting that values diversity and inclusion. Through this program, interns will become accustomed to RTI's open and educational culture, support RTI's mission to improve the human condition, and build upon career goals and grow.  

The SSES Communications and Marketing team performs marketing and strategic communications for SSES priority areas designated by SSES leadership, such as opioid research, water resources management, health care, and education services.  Under the supervision of the SSES Manager of Marketing and Communications and the Marketing Communications Specialists, the candidate will play an integral role in implementing a variety of marketing projects. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Assisting marketing communications colleagues in producing and executing marketing communications campaigns with integrated marketing efforts that may include digital asset creation, print collateral, channel communications, hosting virtual and in-person events, email marketing, etc.
  • Writing content for blog posts, project stories, announcements, external emails, text and display ads, and other platforms,Write social media content for Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn; manage a social media content calendar; and develop social media graphics
  • Helping build and maintain email subscriber lists using desk research to fill in additional details in records and support production of internal weekly executive newsletter
  • Supporting implementation of campaign tracking parameters and monitor and share relevant news articles with the marketing communications team

Additional Information
This paid U.S.-based internship, located in our Research Triangle Park, North Carolina office will take place from September 2019 through August 2020.

The internship requires a minimum commitment of 12 to 15 hours per week. Hours are flexible during business hours (8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday)

Required Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled student pursuing a Bachelor's or graduate degree in a marketing, communications, business, or social science field
  • Resourceful with the ability to quickly grasp new concepts and ideas; detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task
  • Self-starter, able to think creatively and work independently
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and should not require now, or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa status.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with platforms such as Canva, Pardot, Google Analytics, Google AdWords, etc.
  • Experience updating content through a web CMS such as Wordpress

Physical and mental demands of this role include those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, as outlined above.  Examples include:  remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time; operating a computer and other office machinery; thinking, learning, and concentrating effectively and frequently communicating with other people, both within RTI and outside of RTI; frequently moving about inside and travel between offices and laboratories; frequently conducting laboratory site inspections (if applicable), ability to handle the stress associated in meeting frequent, multiple and tight deadlines, ability to work in excess of 40 hours per week as workload and deadlines may require, consistent demonstration of mental stability and ability to have regular, reliable and predictable attendance.
