The Substance Use Prevention, Evaluation, and Research Program within the Center for Behavioral Health Epidemiology, Implementation, and Evaluation Research at RTI International has an immediate opening for an applied Substance Use Prevention PhD-level Research Public Health Analyst. We expect this individual to help develop and lead new and ongoing projects focused on the substance use and misuse of alcohol, marijuana, opioids, stimulants, and other emerging substances. Areas of related potential methodological specialization include the use of epidemiological data for needs assessment and prevention decision making; innovative data collection and analysis for process and outcome program evaluation; and the novel use of communication to disseminate research findings and intervention strategies.


The position will include a broad range of responsibilities in task/project leadership, business development, and research/evaluation. The position requires a background or training in public health or a relevant area of behavioral health and substantial research/evaluation experience in substance use prevention, as well as attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to function both independently and in teams.


This position can be located at our headquarters in Research Triangle Park, NC or regional offices in Washington, DC or Atlanta, GA.


Responsibilities will include:


  • Expanding a research and evaluation portfolio centered on substance use prevention with a focus on alcohol, marijuana, stimulants, and opioids.
  • Serving as Project Director or Principal investigator (PI) on small to medium-scale projects and as Task Lead, Associate Project Director, or Co-PI on larger projects.
  • Tracking and overseeing project progress, deliverables, timelines, staffing, budgets, client relations, and subcontracts. 
  • Leading proposals and grant applications; providing input on sections with technical complexity requiring application of relevant substance use prevention theories, frameworks, and methodologies.
  • Designing research studies and developing evaluation plans, including methods of data collection and analysis.
  • Performing and leading research tasks of moderate technical complexity, applying established and innovative theories, concepts, and techniques.
  • Analyzing, interpreting, and presenting data in a succinct manner for varying audiences such as researchers, government officials, community practitioners, and other community stakeholders.
  • Sharing findings by writing chapters of technical reports or entire technical reports for government and other clients; publishing findings in professional journals and through new media; and presenting results at meetings and conferences.
  • Providing needs assessment, evaluation, and substance use prevention training and technical assistance to internal staff, clients, and prevention practitioners.
  • Performing work with minimal supervision/guidance from more experienced project leaders or program managers.
  • Motivating, mentoring, and supporting research staff.


Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Doctorate in public health, psychology, public policy, sociology, statistics, or a related behavioral health field, with at least 4 years of applied research or evaluation experience in substance use prevention in community contexts (can include graduate-school level work).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of research, policy, and practitioner issues related to substance use prevention and prevention science.
  • Demonstrated expertise in advanced research or evaluation methods.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to produce clear, concise reports and presentations about data and complex issues and the ability to communicate with government officials and clients.
  • Demonstrated scientific stature in peer-review publications and through conference presentations.
  • Proven ability to lead small to medium sized projects or study teams with three or more staff.
  • Ability to meet frequent, multiple, and tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to travel within the U.S.
  • To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and should not require, now or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa status.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven success of securing contract or grant funding from state or federal agencies (e.g., DHHS, AHRQ, NIH, CMS, CDC, SAMHSA, HRSA, VA, DOD, ED) or foundations.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multi-stakeholder initiatives and collaborations.
  • Experience in mentoring trainees and other staff.
  • Demonstrated experience in advanced mixed methods research.
  • Strong quantitative research skills (demonstrated experience with HLM, SEM, LCA, for example, along with related analytic software).
  • Strong qualitative research skills (in-depth interviews, focus groups, protocol development, qualitative data synthesis and analysis, as well as related analytic software (e.g., NVivo, Atlas.ti, Dedoose)
  • Skill with intensive within-subject data analysis.
