The Survey Research Division at RTI International has a future opening in Research Triangle Park, NC Washington, DC, or Rockville, MD, for an RN Director of Clinical Operations who will work on a major research study with substantial public health impact.  This position is expected to be full-time contingent upon award. He/she will be responsible for managing a team of over 30 clinicians who conduct clinical exams, health surveys, biospecimen collection, and lab processing in a mobile medical exam vehicle. The director will supervise staff (nurses, phlebotomists, medical technicians, and dentists) who will conduct exam and sample collection according to the study protocols. The director will also oversee sample processing and temporary storage and the staff who conduct these activities (medical technicians) at the study locations. The director ensures all standard and quality control procedures are followed according to the provided protocol.  He/she also ensures the staff are managing data collection forms and equipment and supplies properly. 

Specific Responsibilities for the Position Include, but not limited to:
• Assist with the development of study protocols for conduct of clinical exams. As a part of protocol development, collaborate with RTI scientists as well as collaborators in the US Public Health Service
• Help with the recruitment of 30 or more clinical staff for the study in tandem with RTI human resources business partners
• Lead development of training for clinical staff on the study protocols. These staff typically include nurses, phlebotomists, medical technicians, and dentists
• Attend “train the trainer” project training, complete required RTI training, courses and certification.
• Lead training of clinical staff (nurses, dentists, phlebotomists, medical technicians, interviewers) on protocols in tandem with a chief medical officer from the US Public Health Service
• Provide oversight for study operations conducted by over 30 clinical staff 
• Provide oversight for sample collection (blood, urine, and other samples) at each assigned study location
• Communicate regularly with the RTI Project Director and Associate Project Director with updates on staffing, enrollment, clinical data collection, equipment and supplies, sample collection, processing, and shipment, and administrative activities
• Oversee quality control activities (e.g., follow QC checklist) as instructed
• Provide fiscal management for study location activities.

Core skills and Abilities:

• Writing skills for development of clinical protocols as a part of a clinical team
• Supervisory, team building and leadership skills on clinical studies
• Experience leading remote clinical teams who travel between clinical study locations
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, coworkers, and other RTI staff
• Excellent knowledge of MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel
• Experience with managing the protections of human subjects
• Ability to multitask and meet deadlines
• Ability to work independently
• Attention to detail and accuracy

Required Qualifications:

• Registered Nurse (RN) with Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing 
• MPH or PhD in Epidemiology or Public Health
• Current RN license in state of residence
• Minimum of 12 years of clinical experience
• Minimum of 1-year supervisor experience in clinical research
• To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and must not now or in the future require sponsorship for a visa.
• Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a public trust security clearance


Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s Degree in Nursing or Current License as Nurse Practitioner in state of residence
• Field study experience
• Bilingual English and Spanish
