We are seeking qualified candidates for a full-time SAS Programmer / Analyst. In this exciting position, the programmer will work with preeminent healthcare researchers and seasoned analytic programmers on interesting and valuable projects to analyze complex healthcare data in a multiplicity of computing environments. The programmer will have opportunities to grow with a skilled and dynamic group of colleagues within the Center for Health Data Analytics.


This position will be located in Research Triangle Park, NC or Waltham, MA.

  • Analyze complex healthcare claims data, to build analytic datasets and perform various statistical analyses in support of a variety of public health healthcare financing project;
  • Work in accord with standards for quality management;

  • Collaborate with other programmers in a team environment;

  • Assist in the preparation of data for client reports, journal manuscripts, and abstracts/posters;

  • Participate in the development of the center's initiatives

Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS/BA degree in computer science, statistics, social sciences, health policy or related field with 10 years SAS programming experience OR advanced degree in computer science, statistics, or health policy and a minimum of 6 years SAS programming
  • Experience manipulating and analyzing healthcare claims data (e.g., commercial, Medicare, Medicaid) and/or other healthcare-related data sources (e.g., EHR, disease registry)

  • Knowledge of healthcare terminology and taxonomy/classification systems (e.g., ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS)

  • Experience designing and implementing flexible, reusable, scalable, computationally efficient and easily maintainable programming code for use across multiple projects (e.g., making use of parameter-, table-, and/or data-driven programming approaches)

  • Commitment to analytic programming quality and best-practices, including experience with QA/QC procedures (e.g., peer review of code, parallel programming)

  • Demonstrated communication skills, both written and verbal

  • To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and not require sponsorship now or in the future.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to multi-task and work on more than one project or task;
  • Experience working with relational databases (e.g., Oracle, Teradata);

  • Experience with multiple computing platforms (e.g., SAS Grid, Linux/Unix, mainframe);

  • Research experience in contract work with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services or in a health-related field

Physical and mental demands of this role include those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, as outlined above.  Examples include:  remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time; operating a computer and other office machinery; thinking, learning, and concentrating effectively and frequently communicating with other people, both within RTI and outside of RTI; frequently moving about inside and travel between offices and laboratories; frequently conducting laboratory site inspections (if applicable), ability to handle the stress associated in meeting frequent, multiple and tight deadlines, ability to work in excess of 40 hours per week as workload and deadlines may require, consistent demonstration of mental stability and ability to have regular, reliable and predictable attendance.
