We are currently seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to join the Enterprise Architecture and Solution Design team within Global Technology Solutions (GTS) unit at RTI International.  RTI International is an independent, nonprofit research institute dedicated to improving the human condition headquartered in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.  This role will report to the Director, Enterprise Architecture and Solution Design and will focus on working in support of meeting customer business needs and furthering RTI’s cloud migration strategy.  The successful candidate for this role is a creative thinker who is skilled and well versed across many technologies including networking, security, infrastructure services and applications who enjoys a challenging environment and solving customer problems.  Typical job duties will involve interacting with internal and external customers, evaluating business needs, creating, documenting and presenting solutions as well as collaborating with engineering and operations teams performing implementations and support.  We are looking for an individual who is a self-starter and someone who is comfortable presenting and challenging ideas in a team environment.               

  • Work as part of architecture and solution design team to ensure customer needs are met by implementing compliant, resilient and cost-efficient solutions to business problems.
  • Strong understanding of how to architect, design and build Cloud environments to meet both performance and cost requirements, with a focus on the Microsoft Azure environment.
  • Design configuration and deployment of equipment in compliance with established technology policies and compliance frameworks including FIPS Low and Moderate standards. HIPAA, 21CFR Part 11, GDPR experience a plus.
  • Review/support development teams in architecting and designing end to end application and data services and security.
  • Collaborate with a team of engineers to develop and maintain corporate, multi-region, private cloud infrastructure running in AWS or Azure.
  • Develop, contribute, and evaluate technical proposals related to cloud migrations and implementations.
  • Work closely with security team on compliance and audit requirements of new solutions and designs.
  • Work with internal customers to design technical solutions to meet business needs, including leading efforts through the design and implementation phases of the IT lifecycle.
  • Design and program automation workflows to help reduce implementation effort and speed time to deliver for the customer. 
  • Assume the role of technical lead for application migration projects including optimizing technical reliability and improving application performance.
Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor-level degree in engineering, information technology, computer science, or equivalent professional experience and/or qualifications plus 6 years of relevant professional experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with Infrastructure design, implementation, documentation, disaster recovery and project management are required. 
  • Experience with hybrid/multi-cloud architecture with existing customer data center services.
  • Experience with Security- IAM, Active Directory, MFA, Anti-Virus, Security and SIEM products, STIG Hardening and custom images. McAfee, Tenable/Nessus, Splunk experience a plus.
  • Minimum 1+ year of demonstrated experience with Azure Cloud, AWS experience a plus.
  • Powershell knowledge is a requirement, experience with automation platforms such as Ansible, Puppet/Chef a plus.
  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP) is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Expert knowledge of and expertise in cloud resource management including underlying technologies and services as well as a strong understanding of role-based access management, including the installation, configuration, automation and monitoring of IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS cloud services.
  • Strong knowledge of Linux system, configuration, and automation.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Windows Based Operating Systems (2008, 2012 and 2016), configuration, and automation.
  • Strong knowledge of networking concepts including IPSEC tunneling, routing, Load Balancers (F5), and firewalls.
  • Strong system design experience required; demonstrated ability to interview customers to determine requirements, design and document solutions in a way that can be transferred to engineering and operations groups for implementation and ongoing support.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills required; demonstrated ability to create and present ideas to senior management.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple and conflicting priorities with minimal direction.
  • Strong innovative and analytical skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A desire to help make customers successful.

Preferred knowledge, skills, and experience:
  • Strong knowledge of scripting languages including PowerShell is required.
  • Experience working in a charge-back environment as well as creation of financial models for designed solutions is preferred.  Superior Excel skills area plus.
  • Knowledge of Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Powershell or ServiceNow Orchestration is preferred.


Physical and mental demands of this role include those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, as outlined above.  Examples include:  remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time; operating a computer and other office machinery; thinking, learning, and concentrating effectively and frequently communicating with other people, both within RTI and outside of RTI; frequently moving about inside and travel between offices and laboratories; frequently conducting laboratory site inspections (if applicable), ability to handle the stress associated in meeting frequent, multiple and tight deadlines, ability to work in excess of 40 hours per week as workload and deadlines may require, consistent demonstration of mental stability and ability to have regular, reliable and predictable attendance.
