RTI International’s International Development Group seeks an experienced technical contributor to be part of the Learning, Energy, and Environment Division (LEED). This person will be a key contributor to our Climate, Natural Resources and Water (CNRW) team, driving technical and implementation excellence and supporting business development growth. 

This position is an opportunity for an experienced water and sanitation professional candidate seeking to expand her/his technical implementation, management, business development, and research experience. The work will entail supporting a growing water and sanitation portfolio of international development projects working primarily in integrated water resources management in relation to upstream/resources management and WASH service delivery especially downstream sanitation and hygiene. This position will be based in either Washington, DC or the Research Triangle Park, NC (RTI headquarters) and will be expected to travel internationally up to 30% of the time. 

The candidate will take part in business development, perform technical assistance, support programs, and conduct research in selected technical areas, ensuring efficient management and quality of work products while working collaboratively with other LEED colleagues.

Essential Duties:
• Working under the direction of the Senior Water Manager and in close cooperation with the Director of CRNW, to support the growth and development of LEED’s water portfolio by backstopping project management and participating in business development efforts, particularly in the areas of water and sanitation service delivery.
• Provide technical program support and technical assistance, including facilitating work planning, to project and program portfolio in given technical area of expertise. This may include field-based short-term technical assistance.
• Contribute technical expertise and proposal development experience to CNRW pipeline for proposals, capture, concept notes, and expressions of interest, with a particular focus on WASH and water resources management.
• Support programmatic strategies and activities, including contributing to the development of technical approaches and tools across RTI’s water resources and WASH sector work. These areas may include, but not be limited to: rural/urban WASH with focus in sanitation/hygiene, water resources management/security, sector governance, and resilience.
• Contribute to other business development activities across RTI International as appropriate and needed, which will include capture, partner identification and development, Salesforce updates, solutioning, leading and/or writing proposal sections and other related tasks.
• Collaborate with key sector partners, donors, consultants, host country counterparts and stakeholders.
• Develop project abstracts, briefs, impact summaries and success stories.
• Contribute to RTI thought leadership in CNRW technical areas, including published technical articles, papers, and reports, as well as presentations, seminars and workshops.


Master’s Degree in water resources/environmental/natural resources management, international relations, business administration or related field with at least 5 years of relevant work experience or Bachelor’s Degree in similar technical areas noted with at least 9 years of experience.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:
• Proven experience supporting international development programs in the WASH and water sector donor programs, preferably with a mix of field-based technical implementation experience and program management.
• Experience supporting the development of technical proposals, such as participating on capture teams, identifying and securing strong partners, supporting solution development, and writing technical sections for proposals.
• Experience in technical work planning, program management, technical assistance, and technical report writing for water activities.
• Experience working on or supporting USAID projects is preferred; experience with other donor programs is a plus.
• Experienced in research, methodologies, innovations, emerging trends and technologies in technical area.
• Field experience working in developing countries is a plus.
• Excellent knowledge of MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong relationship management skills across teams, with clients and counterparts.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet deadlines under pressure, and multi-task.
• Ability to work independently and within matrix project and program teams.
• Attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to travel internationally for extended periods as needed.
• Culturally sensitive and respectful. Proven ability to work effectively in cross-cultural teams and a wide variety of operating environments.
• Proficiency in a foreign language, such as French, Spanish and/or Arabic, preferred

Physical and mental demands of this role include those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, as outlined above.  Examples include:  remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time; operating a computer and other office machinery; thinking, learning, and concentrating effectively and frequently communicating with other people, both within RTI and outside of RTI; frequently moving about inside and travel between offices and laboratories; frequently conducting laboratory site inspections (if applicable), ability to handle the stress associated in meeting frequent, multiple and tight deadlines, ability to work in excess of 40 hours per week as workload and deadlines may require, consistent demonstration of mental stability and ability to have regular, reliable and predictable attendance.
