Knowledge Management/Communications Specialist

 Project Description

RTI International is an independent, nonprofit research institute providing research, development, and technical services to government and commercial clients worldwide. The Food Security and Agriculture division within the International Development Group is implementing the USAID-funded Feed the Future Facilitate Investment Required For Sustainable ExporT (FTF FIRST) activity in Rwanda. FTF FIRST is a five-year program that will work with and through the Government of Rwanda (GOR) to boost economic growth by increasing export of the country’s high-value agricultural crops such as coffee, tea, fresh beans, peppers, and chili.

Job Summary:

The Knowledge Management/Communications Specialist will be responsible for establishing a vigorous communications strategy to raise public awareness, document and disseminate lessons learned, build demand for local innovations, increase awareness of the FTF FIRST Activity, and raise motivations within local stakeholders to increase investment in high-value agriculture.

Essential Duties:  

  • Conduct an aggressive media outreach campaign to raise awareness of the Activity.
  • Provide news releases to radio, television, and electronic media.
  • Organize periodic meetings for the champion local governments to exchange experiences and reinforce their efforts for change.
  • Identify appropriate ways to publicize and disseminate project related information and materials; design and develop project materials and publications.
  • In collaboration with technical team members, write articles on project activities including technical notes, activity reports, success stories, best practices and lessons learned. Collaborate with COP to disseminate to USAID and local media outlets as appropriate.
  • Prepare case studies and other Project-related documentation.
  • Develop other communication tools (newsletters, pamphlets, project briefs) as needed.
  • Update the Project’s Website.
  • Develop an information resource/knowledge management database for the project; collect, compile, and maintain materials from team members for internal and external sharing.
  • Promote knowledge sharing through the organization’s processes, systems and departments/units by helping develop and strengthen links between them to facilitate exchange of information.
  • Work closely with other team members to gather and synthesize project related technical information and data.
  • Translate and write information data into suitable language for a lay audience as appropriate.
  • Liaise with media personnel to publicize FTF FIRST activities.
  • Ensure USAID and project branding guidelines are adhered to.
  • Ensure the Activity’s Branding and Marking Plan is followed on all project documents, reports, and public information materials.
  • Contribute to the development and preparation of annual work plans, quarterly reports and other reports to USAID; edit documents.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Supervisor from time to time.

 Minimum Required Education & Experience

Master’s degree and 1 year of experience or bachelor’s degree and 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent knowledge of MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Ability to listen and communicate well both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to obtain proper security clearances as noted by contracts.

Physical/Mental Demands

Physical and mental demands of this role include those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, as outlined above.  Examples include:  remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time; operating a computer and other office machinery; thinking, learning, and concentrating effectively and frequently communicating with other people, both within RTI and outside of RTI; frequently moving about inside and travel between offices and laboratories; frequently conducting laboratory site inspections (if applicable), ability to handle the stress associated in meeting frequent, multiple and tight deadlines, ability to work in excess of 40 hours per week as workload and deadlines may require, ability to have regular, reliable and predictable attendance.
