RTI International is looking for a Communications Specialist to help develops and implements day-to-day external and internal communications that enhance the RTI International brand and raise awareness of the research in its various divisions. This position plays a key role in the Corporate Communications Department by securing press coverage through strong media and influencer outreach across print, TV, radio, digital, blogger and related industries. The Communications Specialist contributes as a writer and editor to ensure brand consistency and quality content. This role works closely with and reports to the Senior Manager of External Communications and supports RTI by fulfilling routine tasks including media monitoring, message training and development, creation of communications plans and media database management. This role also contributes to sharing news internally with RTI staff members.

  • Assists with the development and communication of Institute news and information to media, other external stakeholders and RTI staff.

  • Writes copy targeting press, consumer, influencer, trade or web outlets. Researches data as needed to inform communications.

  • Supports development of relationships with media and social influencers to secure coverage in consumer, trade and medical magazines, newspapers, television, Web and radio outlets.

  • Responds to general press and blogger inquiries, as well as proactively cultivates media mentions and contacts.

  • Maintains the RTI Newsroom digital platform, posting timely, relevant content and images.

  • Coordinates with agency partners, including public relations firm and other vendors.

  • Researches media coverage and industry trends to develop fresh story or creative pitching ideas.

  • Helps coordinate the production of television and radio co-op and satellite media tours, syndicated newspaper articles, wire releases and other media initiatives.

  • Represents RTI at press, celebrity or influencer events, desktop tours, pitching events, press conferences, trade shows and other functions as needed.

  • Supports copywriting and editing to ensure consistent messaging, professionalism and compliance with legal disclaimers.

  • Responsible for writing and editing internal and external materials, including but not limited to press releases, announcements, talking points, fact sheets, and company descriptions and listings.

  • Performs Newsroom operations duties including coordinating press and influencer notifications; creating and maintaining media and influencer lists via online databases; monitoring news and internet daily for charting, distributing and archiving media coverage; and creating media measurement reports.

  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Required Education & Experience

  • Job Requirements are a combination of qualifications and related experience.

  • Education: B.A. in Journalism, Public Relations or Communications, or work equivalent.

  • Experience: 2-3 years serving in professional Communications or Public Relations capacity.

 

Skills and Abilities
  • Proficiency with AP Stylebook and/or AMA Manual of Style.

  • Demonstrate excellent copywriting, editing and verbal communication skills.

  • Solid knowledge of news outlets and their operations.

  • Experience with scientific or healthcare communications a plus.

  • Experience with internal communications a plus. Proven organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail and demonstrated commitment to quality.

  • Ability to successfully manage and prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines.

  • Self-motivated with an ability to work independently, as well as be an effective team player with a flexible, collaborative attitude.

  • Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).

  • Proficiency in use of traditional media and social media monitoring platforms and databases (i.e. Cision, Trendkite, Lexis Nexis, Critical Mention, Sprout Social, Google Analytics, etc.).

  • Ability to travel domestically. Travel may include up to 10%.
