RTI’s Center for Health Data Analytics – is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time Database Programmer. The Database Programmer will work with researchers to analyze and organize complex qualitative and quantitative clinical, financial and administrative data from multiple sources, and to synthesize results into meaningful reports. Our Program for Computing Systems and Coding Strategies is responsible for developing, codifying and sharing knowledge and best-programming practices across the various technical systems and platforms we work with e.g. the CMS Chronic Condition Warehouse Virtual Research Data Center (CCW/VRDC), Integrated Data Repository (IDR), CMS Mainframe, and the RTI Analytic Grid. We provide analytic development and statistical programming expertise to projects conducting research using healthcare data, especially large and complex health insurance claims and survey data, in a fast-paced environment.


This position will be located in our Waltham, MA office.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Constructing analytic datasets using data stored in relation databases, and producing output – reports, tables and figures using SAS or STATA– driven by project-specific needs
  • Assisting in the preparation of analytic results in the form of client reports, journal manuscripts, and abstracts/posters for professional meetings

Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS/BA or advanced degree in a mathematical, data-oriented, or computing specialty is required with at least 10 years of programming experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience is defined as a Master’s degree in the same area mentioned above and 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Minimum of 8 years of programming experience using SQL in work with data stored in relational databases such as TERADATA, DB2, Oracle, SQL Server is required
  • Mainframe experience required, including TSO and JCL
  • Minimum of 8 years of SAS or STATA programming experience is desirable
  • Strong skills in a linkage of various types of data files are required
  • Familiarity with all phases of the Software Development Life Cycle
  • Proficiency with Windows applications
  • Strong written and oral English-language skills, the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced multitasking environment, the ability to work independently and as part of a team are required
  • To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and have lived in the United States for at least 3 of the last 5 years.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Linux/Unix is highly desirable
  • Health care industry experience desirable
