RTI International develops innovative process technologies in the areas of gas separations, syngas processing, catalysis, CO2 capture and utilization, natural gas, water decontamination, industrial water and biomass conversion for industrial and government clients. Our research supports national and worldwide goals of reliable, sustainable, economically viable, and secure energy supplies.


Our researchers address some of the most challenging energy-related problems faced by the chemical, petrochemical, gas processing, transportation fuels and electric power industries. Whether we are designing pilot-scale gas cleaning systems or conducting laboratory-scale reactor testing on novel catalyst formulations, RTI researchers perform applied R&D to deliver high-quality results and add value for our clients.



Currently, we are looking to add a Research Chemical Engineer to work on CO2 capture technologies and process research within the Center of Technology for Energy, Environment & Engineering located in RTP, NC. In this role, you will play a key role in supporting current and future R&D work on CO2 capture processes and materials. 


You will be provided the opportunity to apply chemical engineering analysis skills to research and analyze various types of industrial chemical processes, associated control system design/operation costs, and environmental regulatory requirements, while working with program managers on project staffing needs and project work load issues.  You will also contribute to business development by identifying new ways to enhance or expand existing tasks/projects and present research ideas/white papers in a clear, concise and well-organized format.




  • Perform and direct information gathering: collect, analyze, and summarize technical data and background information.
  • Apply and interpret standard scientific or chemical engineering theories, concepts, and techniques in chemical engineering processes; understand chemical reactions, byproducts and associated emissions.
  • Design/develop computer spreadsheets and databases to manipulate data and summarize/present information.
  • Serve as primary author of technical memoranda, reports and presentations; orally present (or participate in orally presenting) project results to clients.
  • Perform work with minimal supervision/guidance from more experienced project leaders or program managers.
  • Lead projects of moderate technical or administrative complexity.
  • Lead idea generation, proposals or sections of moderately complex proposals.
  • Contribute to scientific stature activities by participating in RTI internal presentations/seminars, and presenting work/papers at conferences. 
  • Work without deviating from planned scope or schedule without consulting supervisor or client.
  • Ensure that all client deliverables undergo appropriate levels of QA/QC and technical and editorial review.





  • PhD. degree in Chemical Engineering or related fields
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in an engineering, process operations or detail engineering role within the gas processing or refining/petrochemical industry.
  • Knowledge of one or more CO2 capture technologies for post-combustion, pre-combustion, chemical looping and oxy-combustion including their equipment and operations.
  • Skills in engineering review for CO2 capture systems including P&ID, HAZOP, and startup.
  • Solid comprehensive problem-solving skills.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work well independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to generate research ideas and write proposals to funding agencies
  • Effective presentation skills.
  • Ability to write technical reports of projects
  • MS Office computer skills (Access, Aspen/HYSYS a plus).
