The Center for Forensic Sciences (CFS) leads programs that improve the reliability of forensic sciences and advance the use of science and technology in safety and security. CFS is seeking a Research Forensic Scientist to perform research, development, test and evaluation tasks across multiple forensic disciplines and technical areas. The successful candidate will have a proven track record in researching, developing, executing and interpreting standards for analytical testing (e.g., drug testing in urine, oral fluid, hair, and other matrices). The individual will also have demonstrated ability to adapt new technologies and other research innovations into practice in forensic laboratories. The successful candidate will be able to collaborate in cross-disciplinary teams and communicate effectively inside and outside the organization.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Employ established theories, concepts, and techniques on projects that improve the scientific understanding or practice of forensic science and perform forensic science research tasks, applying standard and established theories, concepts, and techniques, while occasionally employing innovative approaches.
  • Collaborate within a dynamic team of experts crossing all forensic disciplines and related technical work and contribute to laboratory work, publications, presentations, and professional meetings. 
  • Exhibit personal leadership by communicating effectively inside and outside your team, developing yourself and those around you, thinking and acting strategically, innovating on projects and daily work, and collaborating effectively with internal and external colleagues.
  • Perform research in the forensic sciences or related technical areas for federal, commercial and internal RTI clients.
  • Research, develop, execute and interpret standards for analytical testing (e.g., drug testing in urine, oral fluid, hair, other body fluids).
  • Investigate problems, perform root cause analysis and develop and implement corrective actions.
  • Conduct technology and market assessments and analyses of forensic science research topics across a range of forensic science disciplines, including areas related to policy, management, and practical application.
  • Assist or lead research projects for internal and external clients, including independent work under the guidance of a research project leader.
  • Select from among a wide array of methods to address differing and variable situations, demonstrating interpretative/evaluative thinking.
  • Prepare reports concerning forensic science innovations for practitioners, researchers, policymakers and other stakeholders across a range of forensic science disciplines, including areas related to policy, management, and practical application. Prepare reports that demonstrate organization, clarity, completeness and proper format.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with external stakeholders, including practitioners, researchers, policymakers or other stakeholders.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with RTI task leaders and colleagues in various roles (e.g., project team member, project leader, client manager, support, etc.) that change with each project.
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external colleagues to plan, conduct, report, and complete tasks that may address scientific, technical, policy, or practice challenges in forensic science.
  • Perform analysis and research with supervision, applying standard and established methods and techniques.
  • Assist in or perform quality control and quality assurance processes relating to funded projects or laboratory methods as needed.
  • Search literature, conduct experimental tests, collect, analyze and summarize data.
  • Develop preliminary findings for review by more experienced researchers and managers.
  • Develop personal knowledge, skills and abilities with the guidance of a supervisor to build capacity for professional growth.
  • Gather background information and other documentation to support marketing and business development activities.
  • Assist project leaders in identifying ways to enhance or expand existing projects and to develop new project opportunities.
  • Maintain a strong customer focus and explore opportunities for innovation (i.e. exploring/evaluating existing and new technologies) in day-to-day research activities.
  • Participate in presentations by contributing to the development of the application/methodology/ technology and assisting with the preparation of the presentation,
  • Gather background information and other documentation to support proposals. Write proposal sections as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • PhD and 0 year's related experience; or a Master’s degree and 4 years’ related experience; or a Bachelor’s degree and 8 years’ related experience.
  • Knowledgeable in the operation of laboratory equipment (GCMS, LCMS, LCMSMS, pH meters, analytical balances, pipettes, etc)
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to work well with others and independently
  • Ability to listen and communicate well both verbally and in writing.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to obtain proper security clearances as noted by contracts.
  • To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and should not require sponsorship for employment visa status, now or in the future.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Work experience in a laboratory that conducts forensic analyses or research relevant to the forensic sciences.
  • Work experience related to the transition of new technologies into practice.
