RTI International’s Center for Newborn Screening, Ethics, and Disability Studies has an immediate opening for a Senior Newborn Screening and Genetics Laboratory Research Director.


The Center for Newborn Screening, Ethics, and Disability Studies conducts translational research designed to inform newborn screening policy and practice, understand the nature and impact of disabilities on children and families, and develop solutions to ethical challenges in genomics, public health, clinical care, and clinical research.  The Center leads a voluntary statewide research screening program, Early Check, to test the benefits of pre-symptomatic identification and treatment for conditions not currently part of standard newborn screening. The RTI Newborn Screening and Genetics Laboratory is being established to support Early Check and to expand research and development capabilities for the identification of rare disease biomarkers. The Senior Newborn Screening and Genetics Laboratory Research Director will report to the Center Director and help lead the Center’s laboratory work related to developing and validating bioanalytical methods and translating research assays into clinical screening practice.


The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in molecular biology, chemistry or other related fields; expertise directly related to screening for rare disease biomarkers; demonstrated expertise in a range of laboratory methods; leadership or management experience in a clinical or research laboratory; involvement in newborn screening initiatives; experience partnering with industry or public health entities; and a track record of securing research funding and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.


The location for the position is on RTI’s main campus in Research Triangle Park, NC.

  • Lead development and validation efforts for bioanalytical assays to support multiple dynamic clinical and non-clinical studies in the Center
  • Mentor and lead a research team ensuring consistent scientific standards and compliance with Institute policies and regulatory requirements on all projects
  • Lead the preparation and submission of grant applications/proposals to both federal and private funders to support research activities in the RTI Newborn Screening and Genetics Laboratory
  • Provide senior leadership on study design, protocol development, study implementation, quality control, and data analysis
  • Lead strategic planning activities for the laboratory to ensure long-term financial stability and sustainability
  • Partner with Center investigators to develop a long-term strategic vision for how the Center can support state and national newborn screening initiatives
  • Lead and support the preparation of reports and peer-reviewed articles based on research and pilot study activities
  • Provide subject matter expertise to clients and Center investigators on relevant projects
  • Propose, initiate, and develop strategic partnerships with professional associations, industry collaborators, academic institutions, public health entities, and other national newborn screening initiatives
  • Have a working knowledge of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)
  • Represent the Center on national committees in the areas of laboratory standards, newborn screening, genetics, and rare disorders
  • Prepare and deliver presentations on Center activities at state, national, and international meetings

  • Ph.D. in Biology, Chemistry, Clinical or Medical Laboratory sciences, or other related fields
  • A minimum of 10 years of related experience; direct experience in a public health, clinical, or research laboratory with human specimens is preferred
  • Supervisory and management expertise over a research team
  • Proven track record in successfully leading or co-leading externally funded research
  • Documented scientific stature through presentations and publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage competing tasks and priorities
  • Ability to work independently and with teams, and to establish and maintain good working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and clients
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States and should not require now, or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa status.
