Within RTI's Environment and Health Sciences (EHS) unit, the Urban Planner for Sustainable and Resilient Cities will be a key member of a team responsible for developing our emerging sustainable and resilient cities practice. EHS has many of the technical capabilities required to support sustainable/resilient cities work and requires an urban planner with a demonstrated track record working on sustainable/resilient cities-related projects and developing new business. Responsibilities will include the entire project cycle from identification, marketing, proposals, and contract negotiation to implementation and project management. Key requirements are technical expertise and established contacts/relationships with cities, international organizations and firms working in this space that will allow RTI to successfully compete in this market by bidding on projects, but also working with governments to create projects and solicit funds. Opportunities to work across RTI units and programs for growth and exposure across sectors (i.e., energy, water, food and agriculture, waste, climate change adaptation and resilience, low emissions development) will be provided.

The Urban Planner, Sustainable and Resilient Cities will support EHS staff in a range of activities including but not limited to:
• Working with a team to implement our sustainable cities business strategy focused on international markets with an initial emphasis on Bangladesh, Brazil, or South East Asia;
• Creating innovative decisions support, permitting, and asset management tools to guide the growth of cities;
• Writing technical approaches and methodologies to solve the biggest challenges encountered by cities; 
• Preparing analyses of urban development issues and recommendations for their resolution. 
• Managing teams of multi-disciplinary subject matter experts to produce statutory and strategic planning documents.  
• Developing client and partner relationships by identifying opportunities to solve their problems and to finding funds for their implementation; 
• Leading and providing input to business development and proposals.


Minimum Required Education & Experience
• Master’s Degree in Urban Planning or Management, Environmental Science or Policy, Engineering or MBA with focus in international development, sustainable development or related concentrations with 5-10+ years of relevant work experience is desired. 
• Minimum 5 years of experience working on urban planning projects in developing countries funded by international organizations. 
• Experience working with and demonstrated understanding of funding cycles of international organizations is a requirement (development banks, bilateral and multi-lateral donors, foundations, etc.).
• Demonstrated success at developing business and winning proposals is a key differentiator, particularly for World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Inter-American Development Bank funded projects.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
• Critical and strategic thinker, able to identify issues and opportunities, provide solutions and reach consensus with multiple stakeholders.
• Possess an understanding of how to engage overseas business markets. Experience working with developing/emerging market countries in Africa, Central/South America, and/or Southeast Asia highly-preferred.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and proven ability to interact with a diverse and cross-cultural candidate and client population.
